Dating back to the mid 60’s, Montreal’s metro network has been decorated with beautiful installations and murals of all shapes and colours. I believe we take for granted that our public transit system has a dual function as an art museum.
The mandate was to create a concept for a publication documenting all of the artwork in Montreal’s metro. I decided to create a design which shines a light on the artists who have contributed to this part of our city’s culture.
When starting this project, extensive research was done on the history of the metro and the artists involved. Despite taking the metro nearly every day since I was 11, I realized that I was taking the diverse artworks our metro has to offer for granted.
This led me to my concept of giving certain artists their own spreads and using their names as design elements. I opted for a square format to compliment the portraits of the artists and to make the publication feel like a standalone object.
Throughout the publication, I decided to place my type and images sporadically to create a collage-like design. The large serif titles interact with each other in playful ways and make for a contemporary design with a hint of class.
