JESUS RAFAEL SOTO

Man Immersed, Original Book Design and Concept!

Jesus Rafael Soto book

Brief

Jesus Rafael Soto was a venezuelan kinetic and op artist who was known for his immersive installations. He was active in the art world from 1950 to 2005, being a pioneer of the kinetic movement and sharing his work all over the world.

The task was to create a book design that encapsulates the essence of Jesus Soto and his art. I sought out to not only highlight his work, but to create an accompanying object that reflects Soto’s ideas of immersion and audience interaction.

Process

While researching Soto, his work and his philosophy; I became fascinated with his focus on creating immersive experiences. His series of work called the “Penetrables” consists of complex installations of hanging rods. When the viewer walks through them, the rods movements create not only a physical connection with the viewers, but the installation as a whole. This research led to me titling the book, “Man Immersed”.

I drew inspiration from this series of works and felt that they best represented Sotos artistic philosophy. I decided to take a black and white image of him walking through one of his own installations to showcase how he is one with his art, and invite readers to delve into his creations.

Lastly, I designed and commissioned this plexiglass case with lines of red tape on the front to simulate the work I described. The straight lines reflect Soto’s strong sense of geometry in his work, and the lines covering the front of the book make it so the viewer can interact with the book and place Soto behind an idea of his own work. Furthermore, the taped lines create a shadow onto the book, representing the kinetic art movement when taking the book in and out of its case.
