Concert Poster + Vinyl Design for the album, Promises

Different pieces of the Promises vinyl design

Brief

Electronic music artist Floating Points' 2021 collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra and the late saxophonist Phaorah Sanders is an emotional record and cohesive fusion of three genres.

I was tasked to create a poster for a potential performance of the album. I wanted to represent the feelings I had while listening to the album and its blending of three genres through my visual and composition. For the vinyl I sought out to create an interactive object that plays with the creative fusion of genres on the record, with a variable record design.

Process

The design process began with a deep dive into Promises, trying to immerse myself in albums emotional depth and develop my thoughts on it. I also conducted a research on Floating Points and Pharoah Sanders to further connect with their collaboration. My research evoked thoughts on the past, the present and the passing of life and this led me to thinking of my 94 year old grandmother. We are very close and over the years I have heard many stories from her life.

I had the idea to represent this idea with a picture of my grandmother as a young adult, and juxtapose it with a picture of her today. Through many rounds of experimentation with various methods of creating this blend, I came to separating different parts of her face with blob forms and going analog to give the visual a nostalgic feel. The idea of creating this blend was also my way of representing the albums fusion of genres.
